With the full line-up of the luminary 2011 Frankly! It’s a Pop Festival having just been announced, back with more esoteric songstresses and enigmatic audio mavericks at the Brisbane Powerhouse September 10, organisers are pleased to announce Australian tour dates for festival headliners, LA Vampires (US), the shapeshifting soundsystem of Amanda Beth Brown (co-runner of Not Not Fun Records and ex-Pocahaunted voodoo-ist). The tour takes in six dates across the country through early September.
To celebrate the third coming of Frankly!, a free digital sampler featuring 9 tracks from the festival’s incredible lineup is now available for download globally, including contributions from LA Vampires (US), Wet Hair (US), Oorutaichi (JPN), Angel Eyes (AUS) and more.
The Frankly! 2011 sampler features the following tracks, available now for free download:
LA Vampires – Streetwise
Angel Eyes – Loosing Grip
Miko – Yoake
Pikelet – Hallway Master
Ytamo – Alice
Blank Realm – Full Moon Door
Twerps – She Didn’t Know
Wet Hair – Echo Lady
Oorutaichi – Futurelina
The only event of its type in Australia, in 2011 Frankly! captures some of the left-field majesty of the festival in a free release sampler. Curator Lawrence English said, “We’re constantly surprised by the amazing ways artists are taking the tried and true formulas and seeing what can be cooked up with a little experimentation here and there.
“This year for Frankly! we’re hosting a killer selection of artists and they’ve all been kind enough to offer us some new, exclusive and unusual songs – and to say we’re excited is an understatement!”
Making its debut in 2009 and graduating its sophomore year with acts such as Xiu Xiu, High Places and Crayon Fields, Frankly! quickly raised eyebrows in Australia’s indie scene for its innovative program and unique setting at Brisbane’s Powerhouse.
With the second lineup announcement, Frankly! has paid further attention to the burgeoning Los Angeles hypnagogic-pop label Not Not Fun, adding two of their Australian signings Angel Eyes and Blank Realm to play alongside their US labelmates from Frankly!’s first announcement, LA Vampires and Wet Hair.
The new Frankly! announcement also adds Oorutaichi, the prince of Osaka’s psychedelic pop subculture, joining one of the finest showcases of Japanese avant pop ever assembled in Australia, with Tokyo Folktronica artist Miko (backed by Celer) and Osaka eccentric song queen Ytamo.
From Australia, Frankly! proudly announces ambient pop guru Pikelet joining their countrymen Twerps to round out the lineup.
